Google Voice Verification Code Scam what to do

The Google Voice verification code scam is a common fraud in which scammers trick individuals into sharing the verification code sent by Google Voice. If you’ve been a victim of a Google Voice verification code scam, the most important step is to immediately disconnect your phone number from Google Voice by accessing your Google Voice settings and selecting the option to disconnect your number; this prevents the scammer from using your number to create a Google Voice account linked to you.
What is the Scam?
Scammers pose as potential buyers, sellers, or trustworthy individuals and convince you to share the Google Voice verification code sent to your phone. They use this code to create a Google Voice account linked to your phone number, which can then be used for fraudulent activities.
Steps to Take If You’re a Victim:
1. Recover Your Google Voice Account
- Visit the Google Voice account recovery page.
- Sign in using your Google account.
- Follow the steps to reclaim your account and unlink your phone number from the scammer’s account.
2. Remove Your Phone Number from Their Account
- Go to the Google Account Help page.
- Use the instructions to remove your phone number from their Google Voice account.
3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
- Log into your Google account.
- Enable 2FA for added security to prevent unauthorized access.
4. Warn Your Contacts
- Notify your contacts that your phone number may have been compromised. Scammers often use stolen numbers to target others.
5. Monitor for Fraudulent Activity
- Watch for suspicious activities involving your phone number.
- Monitor your accounts, particularly your banking, email, and social media accounts.
6. File a Complaint
- Report the scam to:
- Google: Use the Google Voice Help Center.
- Federal Trade Commission (FTC) if you’re in the U.S.: Report Google Voice Fraud.
Educate Yourself: Learn more about common scams and how to protect yourself from them. This will help you recognize and avoid similar situations in the future.
How to Avoid This Scam in the Future
- Don’t share verification codes with anyone, even if they seem trustworthy.
- Be skeptical of unsolicited requests for personal information.
- Avoid engaging with buyers/sellers or unknown individuals who ask for verification codes.
- Use a strong password for your Google account and change it periodically
